Isaiah 6:1-13 “What do You Really Want”

This week, John McGimpsey finished off his series “what do you really want?” by looking at the commissioning of Isaiah.

Isaiah 6 (ESV)

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train[a] of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]

And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

“‘Keep on hearing,[c] but do not understand;
keep on seeing,[d] but do not perceive.’
10 Make the heart of this people dull,[e]
    and their ears heavy,
    and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
    and turn and be healed.”
11 Then I said, “How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
“Until cities lie waste
    without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
    and the land is a desolate waste,
12 and the Lord removes people far away,
    and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 And though a tenth remain in it,
    it will be burned[f] again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
    whose stump remains
    when it is felled.”
The holy seed[g] is its stump.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 “What do you really want?”

This week John Mcgimpsey from GPC Christchurch preached for us from 2 Corinthians. True strength is found when we are weak.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 (ESV)

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,[a] a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Luke 2:14 “Peace on Earth”

This Christmas Roger Wilson preached from Luke 2, where “Peace on Earth” is the announcement that accompanies the birth of Jesus.

Luke 2:14 (ESV)

“Glory to God in the highest,
    and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Philippians 1:27-30 “Following Christ’s Example”

What does it look like to follow Jesus? This week John Young took us through the end of Phillippians 1 to find out.

Philippians 1:27-30 (ESV)

27 Only let your manner of life be worthy[a] of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Ephesians 6:17 “Spiritual Warfare, Part 6: The Helmet of Salvation”

“There is no salvation for you in God.” This is the kind of language that Satan can use to us to give in to despair and hopelessness. This is why the helmet of salvation is an important part of the Armour for the Christian.

Ephesians 6:17 (ESV)

and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

Ephesians 6:16 “Spiritual Warfare, Part 5: The Shield of Faith”

The shield of faith is presented by Paul as a part of the armour that is able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. How then do we take up the shield of faith?

Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)

16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;

Ephesians 6:15 “Spiritual Warfare, Part 4: Gospel Shoes”

In order to be ready for spiritual battle, we need the gospel of peace. Peace not in the sense of a cease fire, but a fullness of fellowship with God and each other.

Ephesians 6:15 (ESV)

and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Ephesians 6:14 “Spiritual Warfare, Part 3: The Breastplate of Righteousness”

What does it mean to put on the breastplate of righteousness? How will this help us to stand against the attacks of the Devil? The answer has two parts. John explains.

Ephesians 6:14 (ESV)

14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness

Ephesians 5:21-33 “A Marriage that Works in a World that doesn’t”

This week Peter Reynolds Preached from Ephesians 5 on a Marriage that Works. Peter Reynolds is a counsellor and GPCNZ pastor from Auckland. Peter and his wife Margaret were in Invercargill this weekend facilitating our Marriage and Parenting Seminar.

Ephesians 5:21-33 (ESV)

21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.[a]28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 6:14a “Spiritual Warfare, Part 2: Fasten on the Belt of Truth”

Truth is the first part of the armour that Paul mentions to be put on by Christians. It is vital we know and speak the truth in order that we may stand.

Ephesians 6:14 (ESV)

14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
